It's All Small Stuff

The call came this morning: Tim and I will receive our first covid shot on April 21st. A momentous day. It is also Tim's birthday. We will receive our second shot on May 25th. So, that was good news. (Late Edit: actually, we are getting the first dose this Sunday. It seems like everything is opening up for all age groups all at once. I canceled the first appointment, and we will drive to nearby Corry. Tim will not have to miss work.)

The library is going to reopen. It's been months since we could walk in there and borrow a book. That just feels like something to celebrate.

Although we have yet to catch a glimpse of him, Get-Along the feral cat looks to have survived the winter. We are seeing small signs that he is about. We try to make his life as easy as he will tolerate. He is truly a wild animal and will not approach or allow himself to be approached. He is obviously a smart creature, knowing how to avoid foxes and coyotes and the semi trucks that rumble by on the highway. He is also an excellent mouser, and we are glad to have him around the property.

New calves at my sister's house.

The next 10 days are all supposed to have daytime temperatures between 61 and 69 degrees. That's 16 and 20 degrees for you celcius folks.

The greenhouse is framed. The next step will be installing the windows and the polycarbonate roof panels. That will probably be next weekend.

It was a nice Easter day.

  1. Get-along could have a new winter apartment when the greenhouse isn't being used? Super name for a feral cat Debby!

  3. That's funny Northsider. I was considering making him a cozy place, but he seems to stick close to the old ramshackle house. When we get the new house built, I am hopeful that we can encourage him to relocate before we tear down the house, but I'm not sure that can be done. He really won't come near. He'll watch us from a safe place but he's very feral. I'm kind of hoping once the new house is done and we are living there full time, we'll be able to convince him to be a bit more friendly.

  5. Good news about your vaccinations. I am relieved to have had my first one, despite all the bad press.
Perhaps you could tempt Get-along with a nice juicy mouse or two?

  7. I hope you are able to get your shots. Just took my MIL for her shot this morning. She is afraid of needles and so we got her the J&J one dose vaccine. She was very happy about that. Due to her age, she was eligible a lot earlier but due to her getting Covid back in January and getting the antiviral cocktail as a precaution back then, she is only now eligible. So now we are down to just two kids who haven't been fully vaccinated and me who is only partially.

  8. My little feral cat, is only after 6 months allowing me to stroke him when he gets fed. Glad to see that you are both getting your vaccinations soon.

  9. Is there a photo of Get-along anywhere on the blog? It would be nice to see.

  10. I call him a 'cow cat' Andrew. (He is a Holstein to be precise.) We have never managed to get a picture of him. If we are looking for him, we are sure not to see him. When we see him, it's always a bit of a surprise. He will watch from the tall grass while I work in the garden sometimes. He watches from concealed places. He really does not want to be bothered with the likes of us. As we are there more, perhaps he will not be so wary, but right now, he's a cat you get a glimpse of. We set food out for him while we are there, and it will be gone the next day. We will see cat tracks along the creek or in the snow. Catch sight of him trotting across the cemetery.

Who knows? Perhaps he is a ghost of some long ago cat that lived there when Olive bought the place 125 years ago. ;)

  11. We have news today of more opening up here in the UK too. Slowly we seem to be getting there. The vaccines are so wonderful - something truly to give thanks for. I do not especially fear the virus for myself and yet I was lifted when I had my jab - I hope you are too. Late now so signing off...
'Nos da' as they say here in Wales.

  12. I'm so happy you're going to get your first shot and scheduled for your second. It really is such a feeling of relief to get it. However, we still remain very cautious because of the variants running around loose.

  13. And the small stuff is happening at a very nice time of year, which maybe enhances the pleasure.
