Scam

I was very surprised to receive an envelope in mail, boldly emblazoned with the words
WARNING!
$2000 FINE, 5 YEARS IMPRISONMENT OR BOTH
FOR ANY PERSON INTERFERING OR OBSTRUCTING WITH
DELIVERY OF THIS LETTER U.S. MAIL TTT.18.CODE

The letter purported to be from a company called Property Site, out of Fresno California.
I opened it up and it was a bill for $95. to record the deed of a recent house we purchased.

The thing is, that's not how things are done. The deeds are recorded right here in the county where the property is located. We have a lawyer that registered the deed change. We got a copy of that information from him, and if we need any additional information, we would just walk two blocks to the court house and look it up ourselves. We might have to pay a quarter a page for copies, but there is no charge for the information. Registering the deed was included in the lawyer's billing, which, coincidently, the seller usually pays for,

So, I thought, "What the heck?" and googled the return address into google.
Up popped this:

  2. These people disgust me, preying on the vulnerable who would not know it was fake.

  5. Good grief, if these people put half the effort to come up with this into something legal and useful they could probably do pretty well for themselves!!

  6. That is a bit more sophisticated than I have seen before. Thanks for the heads up.

  7. Anvil Cloud, I was much disappointed to see that you have to put a stamp on the return envelope. One of my 'things' is to take a couple pieces of junk mail, carefully folded, and put it in the return envelope and send it back to them on their dime.
