Conversation from a Marriage

We've got some pretty strong winds today. The storm we're getting hit with now is the same one that spawned all the horrible tornadoes and damage in the south. Our wind is not nearly that extreme, but we have gusts up to 55 mph. Falling tree warnings. Advisories about driving.

I'm making one trip out this evening. I'm delivering a pizza to a friend. Her husband has had a hip replacement and has a hankering for a Pizza Hut Supreme Pizza. The advisory is done at 6, so I'm guess that the 5 PM delivery time is pretty safe, with the wind dying down.

Tim called me at first break. "It's really getting windy here," he commented. "Watch Joanne's (our neighbor) trees." They are huge things that sustained severe damage during a couple bad storms this summer. One landed on a roof. Not ours, but Tim gets a bit nervous about the wind ever since we had the two trees fall on the house at the retirement property.

I said, "They're dancing around pretty good. I'm keeping an eye on the tin on the wood pile. It seems like it's staying put." (It's weighted down.)

Tim continued. "Keep an eye on the trucks. Make sure nothing falls on them." (They sit under two very large trees. There is no place to put them that's any safer, really.)

I said, "Soooooooo....what is it that I'm supposed to do if trees start toppling over on your truck? I don't think I'm going to run out there and throw myself between the trees and your trucks. It just doesn't seem like the smart thing to do. Nope, Tim. The trucks are on their own, baby."

Tim hesitated. In the end, he decided his wife was more valuable than his dump truck and his beloved old 1981 Chevy pick up. Only then did he laugh.

  2. I often wonder about the road signs we have here in the UK which say falling rocks - are you meant to drive faster or slower. I mean, if they hit, they hit!

  3. I once rebuilt part of a roof. Once it was finished, we went away for a few days. Got a phone call. Yup. A tree.

  4. One of the few advantages to being deaf is that when there is a gale blowing I take my hearing aid out when I put my head on the pillow amd I never hear a thing.

  5. It's pretty windy here too in NE PA. The weather on my phone says 23 mph winds. We lost electricity. Good thing it's not too cold out!

  6. I guess that the wind has died down a lot since you published this blogpost. I pray to Almighty God that Tim's vehicles escaped the onslaught with zero damage. I also hope that your neighbour enjoys the Pizza Hut Supreme Pizza and appreciates your daredevil bravery in getting that pizza to him.

  7. I was thinking what Tim ultimately decided as I read your post. Watch the trees and do what exactly?!

  8. Yep, Pizza was delivered promptly at five. The muddy dirt road they live on was slick and slippery but my trusty car drove right up that hill with no complaining and snarling like your Clint. I slid my way right back off the hill and home with additional difficulties.

Seems like everything was pretty much done by 4.

  10. I was beginning to wonder how many eyes you would need to get through the event. I just went to bed.

  11. Bad experiences with weather really change the way you see it subsequently! I used to really enjoy a good storm until it hailed so bad here that loads of cars were trashed and it flooded so bad the water came up to our doorstep ( thankfully no further so far)!

  12. Ha! Honestly, what could you have done if the trees started to fall anywhere? I think I'd have just turned on a TV show and hoped for the best. LOL

  13. I folded laundry in front of the television, and put the laundry away. I took a shower and did some paperwork, and gathered things for the new tenant. I listened to the wind, and as all winds do, they died down.
